So I finally found and purchased another Montego! Twenty years after my first one was hit, I now have another from which to rebuild. Just sitting in the driver’s seat was like being transported in time!
It’s a base Montego model, not an MX like my previous one. It’s solid M code white, 302, 3.03 3 speed on the floor, and a 3.00 open 9 inch. While it does have power steering and A/C, brakes are 4-wheel manual drum. During the rebuild process, all of the MX upgrades will be installed on the base body.
I hadn’t realized, until seeing a base Montego, how many extras the MX package entailed. All of the MX trim and chrome will be swapped over, including the C-pillar trim that masks the color line. Two-tone paint looks so great on these cars. The power front disc brakes and limited slip 9″ will definitely be swapped. I’m not sure about the transmission. Since this will be a fun car and not a daily driver, I like the idea of it being a stick. Although, the 3-speed toploader will have to be upgraded to a 4-speed toploader. And forget installing a 5-speed. I’m a bit of a purist. Upgrading is fine, as long as it’s with parts/options from withing the era.
It will be a while before I get to start digging into this project. But just knowing I have another Montego waiting for me is like breathing a sigh of relief I’ve been holding for twenty years.
