Swapping the front axles on a 65-79 Ford truck chassis:
So why swap? There are three good reasons: 1- replacing a damaged unit, 2- you want a 73-79 disc brake setup on your 65-72, or 3- uprating a 1/2 ton to a 3/4 ton. In my case it was uprating my ’79, then installing it’s old 1/2 ton disc setup under the newly aquired ’71.
Upgrading the front axles on a 2wd 65-79 chassis is fairly straightforeward. It is especially easy if everything is replaced as unit. This eliminates the chance of parts mis-match to to production variances over the years. And if your king pins are in good shape, and you’re not painting, there are actually very few items to unfasten. Given you have your tools and a good workspaces ready, this swap can easily be accomplised in an afternoon.
